TVB Eye in the Sky Episode Thoughts (Episode 1)

Welcome to my episode thoughts for the new TVB series, Eye in the Sky. Featuring one of my favourite actors and actresses such as Tavia, Kevin and Ruco, I will be closely following this series for the interesting plot. Did I like the first episode? Frankly I have very high expectations for this series and so far I like this series, but that's all for now.

This series has an Amy Wong production type of feel (but it's a Foon Chun Ciu production). As soon as I watched the opening credits which showed brothers (Kevin and Ruco) "from friends to foe" and the style of the opening credits reminded me of "Brother's Keepers".

Anyway first scene showed Kevin Cheng (I will refer to him as Sitou Sir from now) standing in front of his subordinates and facing the big screen of CCTV cameras installed in the streets of HK. Without looking back he pointed his finger to the subordinate behind him who was yawning and then told the guy off on the right who was on his phone. He said "Can we please be more focused".

Meanwhile we have Jenny (portrayed by Tavia Yeung) and Samantha Ko (couldn't catch her name) walking in the streets and Jenny realises something is wrong. Well more like multiple things were wrong. One, the first of the newspaper stall had a different staff. Two, there were three salespeople in the stall the other day but today there are only two and three, the girl wore a hat that belonged to the other guy (implying they are together or something). The two of the girls decided to get nosy and approached the newspaper stall guy (who of course was the police) and boy did they annoy the hell out of everyone and could of potentially jeopardised the operation itself.

Pause. I like Tavia in here as the bubbly Jenny. This is one of the first time perhaps that I've seen a main character with great photographic memory. Even though she basically can realise everything, she is still dumb and clueless of the truth. From a sassy assassin to a clueless lady, which character do I still prefer? Frankly, I still want Tavia to be an assassin.

There comes Madam Chik who carries lunch for everyone and next minute someone notices something wrong in the CCTV. Camera zoomed in and there we see a guy proposing to a girl. What was strange was that a couple in the crowd was not looking at the proposal but instead looking at the officer marking the roll for the jewellery store. Subsequently Sitou then suspected that there were the likely thieves who are about to rob a jewellery store and told everyone to be on standby.

Action time. The thief couple was caught red-handed. Sitou Sir notices something strange through the CCTV of a guy walking towards the jewellery store when the crowd is running away from the scene and shouts out to his co-workers "Watch your back! Someone armed is behind you!".

Pause. This Sitou Sir is a very smart dude. He stands out because his observant, logical and analytical. He knows when something is urgent and will not hesitate to help.

Continue. The mysterious man that Sitou Sir was aware then suddenly fires shots to the police officers and everyone dodges. This then gives an opportunity for the thief couple to escape in a car along with the armed gunman. The man of the thief couple then got shot from one of the cops but the other two drive away from the scene. This was when the action started to become more exciting where Sitou Sir demanded the traffic lights to be red so they can stop the car. Obviously the car took a u-turn but then it crashed with another car and off they go running. After all sorts of obstacles the girl got caught but the armed guy was still running and he bumped on Jenny and her friend. Scared as hell, their reaction was funny with "Ah!!! I don't know you... We didn't see anything". Then comes the hero of the day; Sitou Sir who hits the armed guy with a motorbike and casually arrests him.

Pause. It just seems like no-one is hard enough for Sitou Sir to catch. I like the fact how he just casually pulled out his phone and played Sudoku while waiting for the cops to come. Just So-so-kool.

Skipping ahead, let's jump to the bit where Sitou Sir visits the detective agency. As Sitou Sir came inside we have Jenny's father George who is the owner of the agency. Sitou wanted to leave when he saw that whilst George was being interview he was bragging about how himself and questioning whether he has any detective skills. As he was about to leave, there comes Jenny who convinced him to stay and accepted his request to spy on a gangster.

Pause. Quite a funny scene when Sitou Sir was being a flirt to Jenny. In the conversation that they had Jenny asked "Why are you getting us to spy on someone. Can't the CIB just do it?" and Sitou Sir replied "Because there is no-one good looking enough to do the job and Jenny was blushing. And when Jenny asked, "What's your name by the way, mm, it's part of the application process so I need to know" and Sitou Sir said, "Well if your name is Jenny, then my name is Johnny". I found that conversation very funny indeed and Sitou Sir is now a cool flirt.

Jumping to more memorable scenes again we have Jenny spying on the gangster and following his agenda with his Korean girlfriend. I somehow wasn't convinced in the scene that Jenny was a detective. Her camera was pretty massive and she was taking so many photos. It looked very obvious and to me I was unconvinced of Jenny's character as a competent detective. Of course Jenny eventually got busted one of the gangsters who noticed her taking so many photos or following them in an obvious way. What was funny though was when Father George came to the rescue along with his detective employee where George acted as a police checking the body of his employee disguised as a criminal and shooed the gangster away. That George is quickly becoming one of my favourite character in the episode or in the series as he is a rather streetsmart, shifty, wise and knowledgeable detective.

What was even more funny though was when Jenny dreamed of her so-called "grand-plan" to take the big gangster's phone and hack into it and then return it back. So her plan was to dress up as an attractive Korean girl where the gangster portrayed by Kam Kong would invite her to the table. After some flirting and chit-chatting Jenny would take his phone that was identical to her phone and then let the detective employee hack into the phone and then go ops sorry got the wrong phone and give it back.

Obviously everything didn't go according to plan when Jenny noticed no one cared of her big entrance. Jenny was even shocked to know that Kam Kong changed his phone and now had a shiny white phone. No-one invited her to the table and she had to ask them for a seat but they say "sit somewhere else" and she made an excuse "Nah there too cold". When Kam Kong noticed Jenny he said "Woo so hot" but was actually referring to his girlfriends and not Jenny. With nothing going to plan Jenny trip the waiter and spilled water to their table and then stole the phone in the chaos. But as she walked towards the door the "grrrrr" ringtone went off and they came chasing after.

Pause. A very very very funny scene. Tavia here made the right expressions of "shit" and "damn it". Audiences would find her a very likeable character if she continues to be cute and funny (too bad the serious drama may start soon).

Continue. Jenny gave her phone to the detective employee and he managed to successfully hack into it. Jenny then retrieved the phone back and then tried to give the phone back to the gangsters and then run away but she was trapped by Kam Kong and the other gangsters. Thankfully Sitou Sir came in time to rescue Jenny before she would be somewhat reluctantly raped by the gangsters.

Pause. Sitou Sir comes to the rescue all the time. It seems like whilst Jenny has good memory, she doesn't have good skills to escape out of difficult situations. I found it too convenient for Sitou Sir to be everywhere for Jenny.

Continue. Jenny hops on Sitou Sir's motorbike and they drive away but one of the gangsters slightly gives his arm a cut. Back at the detective agency Jenny bandages his injury and they lock eyes at each other and you guess it. Sex. The first episode hasn't even ended yet and they already have a sexual encounter.

Back to some serious stuff. The next day Sitou Sir is approached by his co-workers and they suspect him of arson. Madam Chik shows Sitou Sir a CCTV clip of him (actually some-one who looked like him) attempting to cause a fire. There was a line that Madam Chik said that was particularly memorable:

"You tell me to trust the Sky in the Eye (CCTVs), because you say CCTVs are objective in nature and they show what is happening. What this clip showed happening was a person with the same shoes as you and the same looks as you trying to cause a fire. How do you explain this?"

Sitou Sir insists his innocence and then gets released from bail. Sitou Sir walks out and as he walks there is someone near him walking in the other direction and guess what? He looked exactly like Sitou Sir.

End. I am suspecting that it is his twin brother (well obviously it is). Why did his twin brother try to cause a fire and how can Sitou Sir prove his innocence? We shall know in episode 2.
Plot-wise not much comment expect I hope they don't overuse the "twin-brothers" storyline. The CCTV theme though is however very refreshing for me and this episode raises the question "Can we trust CCTV?".

So far Kevin Cheng is doing fine in this series as someone cool, professional and flirtatious. I find his character as Sitou intriguing because it seems like he holds a lot of secrets that we have yet to find out what they are. Yes he looks much older but that's because we haven't seen him for years but he has a cool hairstyle.

I am however disappointed that Tavia Yeung didn't get to portray her original role as an assassin from the original presentation clip. Other than that I am not that disappointed since she still has a quite interesting role as someone with photographic memory although quite clueless. Her character is also quite funny unintentionally funny and yet bubbly. Tavia displays these characteristics very well so far and so far she is giving a promising start.

Like some netizens have noticed, Tavia Yeung's face looks different again - this time not so much the nose but her cheeks and face in general. Whether she used botox or whatever I don't care as long as she knows what's she doing, after all it's her face.

So far no comment for Lin Xia Wei and others.

We have yet to see Ruco but I know he will appear soon and he will probably get as much screen-time as Kevin so don't worry fans.

As you all can tell I am inexperienced with episode thoughts so do not hesitate to tell me how I can improve. Also please forgive my grammar mistakes everywhere because I don't take much time proofreading and editing my episode thoughts!

  1. I really like what I watched so far. Episode 2 is really good too. Kevin and Ruco are brothers in this show?
