Review for TVB Star Awards Malaysia 2014 Nomination List (馬來西亞星光薈萃頒獎典禮2014)

The TVB Star Awards Malaysia results are going to be announced tonight. Before we get to know the results, let's have fun guessing who might just win:

Comment: In terms of ratings and word-of-mouth Line Walker triumphs all other series but Outbound Love may win since some parts are filmed in Malaysia, but frankly I am not sure whether this series was a critical success in Malaysia. If Line Walker wins I will be satisfied because I liked the level of suspense in this series where it keeps the audience guessing 'who is the 5th undercover' and pumped with dramatic twists (from a black cop to not one but four different Mr.Songs (each from a different industry - political, financial, judiciary and real estate fields). If you feel that's even not enough then there's actually a whole group of international powerful people who are in a higher status than the four already high status Mr.Songs. Sounds messy right?

Comment: For me Roger deserves the Best Actor award this year. He managed to pretend to look innocent yet be such as scheming and malicious person which is great. Even if you look at his performance based on the last scene of the whole series he was masterful (his evil smirk made him like person with a distorted reality thinking he has won when really he lost everything). 'Matt' will no doubt be a character that I will ever forget for a very long time.

Comment: In my humble opinion I think Carmen Lee deserves to win because she acted so well for 'Never Dance Alone'. If you look at the scene in episode 25 where she was grieving for her dead husband you could see her grief even though she didn't go spastic or anything. To me that is subtlety and she portrayed her charactered of 'Siu Si' consistently as someone quite shy, clumsy yet elegant very nicely. So kudos to Carmen Lee!

Comment: If I have to pick I'll choose Benz Hui. He was fantastic as someone evil yet had a human side of him if you get what I mean (like when he is with his son). His evil laughs are very convincing. His facial expressions are appropriate and well-emoted. Too bad he died in the later part of the series. He should win because I watched 'Line Walker' for his great performance and now because of him I am eager to watch the film adaptation.

Comment: Elena Kong was spectacular from a battered wife in the series. My favourite scene of hers was actually during the court scenes. Every line was delivered with such an emphasis that demanded your attention.

Overall this is a popularity contest so I know that some will win even though in my opinion they pale in comparison to the other nominees in terms of acting. Popularity-wise, Charmanie probably will win for Best Actress though. We shall see tonight.

Hong Kong TV Series that I am watching at the moment...

So far I am watching quite a lot of series. One of them is 'Overachievers' and I can understand how the ratings are below average despite it being star-studded. Those stereotypical household wives may be expecting for some family feud by rather it's not. Then others (such as young viewers for instance) may be turned off from the look of the series as appearing as a family feud series when in fact it has got heavy content about business and trading. Story-wise so far so good and the performances are not bad at all. Grace Chan acting as 'a Bi' was not bad at all as a newcomer. A problem I have with Wayne Lai is that even though he makes a competent performance as 'Old Mai', I always see similar acting styles or characters of him being 'righteous and often outspoken' that is preventing him being having a breakthrough performance. I really hope that sooner or later he will get a chance to play an ugly, creepy and disgusting villain. Now that would be a breakthrough! I must however applaud the actress portraying 'Ivy' as the mistress for her rather convincing performance. She appeared in episode four from 'Tiger Cubs II' and I liked her there as well. I will talk more perhaps if I decide to make a review for this series.

Second series I am watching at the moment is yes, 'Come On Cousin'. I have mixed feelings about this series. At times it is extremely witty and funny that will make me laugh so hard and be glued to every scene but then at other times the story is a bit lame and poorly constructed. This aside and we have one of the most best cast group in TVB's history, with Joey, Roger, Wong Cho Lam, the other secondary characters and veterans having such amazing chemistry that makes it a formula for success (if only they polished the series a bit more and stopped it being so inconsistent and silly).

There was this one scene (in episode 19) where Roger Kwok was trying to manipulate the emotions of the people trying to buy pork in the supermarket. Roger Kwok did very well in terms of using different persuasive methods such as convincing them to buy pork, scaring them of pork's potential harm to the body, alleviating their fear of buying pork by claiming the harm is insignificant and then telling them how they have sacrificed the life of a pig to fulfil their desires to make a meal. Whether it is for Matt from 'Black Heart White Soul' or 野仔 from 'Come On Cousin', he has my vote for this year's Best Actor award!!!

Third series I am watching right now is 'Tiger Cubs II'. Even with the lame excuse that 'Madam Sin' (portrayed by Jessica Hsuan from Tiger Cubs I) is off to England for training, I am still liking this series so far. Compared to the first series, this one has a bit more dark theme where episode four was about a bizarre Japanese terrorist organisation being unscrupulous to ensure the end of the world. Sounds crazy right? Linda Chung started off very unnatural and so forced but I am tolerate her in here much more than her performance as 'Rachel' from Brother's Keeper. I hope she does get better as the series moves on.

Fourth series that I am watching but not very keen to watch is 'Come Home Love'. I am only watching this series when I have spare time or busy doing something at the same time. Sort of like 'Tiger Cubs II' each episode is a different focus and I find it ok. Not much to comment except I am hope that this series ends soon since it is dragging way too long with some of the characters that I like gone. Not much to comment about this series.

Think it stops from here? Nope. I am also watching HKTV's series!!!

Fifth series that I am watching is 'Borderline' and sixth series is 'The Election'. If you want my honest opinion I still rather much prefer TVB series. Maybe it is because I am too used to TVB's cinematography where for the HKTV series the scenes are a bit too dim to see. It was both good and refreshing though to see a lot of former TVB artists to be acting such as Dominic Lam. Plot-wise though, 'The Election' grabbed my attention of it being so relate-able to the current situation in HK yet it was filmed quite a while ago. I also am finding it hard to understand or bear on Angelica's accent. Other than that she does have some acting chops and I really applaud HKTV for taking risks to produce series that are interesting yet controversial in nature. I am concerned though that the sensitive and quite complicated plot for 'The Election' may be too hard for viewers to follow on and will this shut down the opportunity for HKTV to have a market in Mainland China? We'll see.

One thing that I discovered is that for this year all the anniversary series seem to either sequels or spin-offs. Overachievers can be viewed as a modern spin-off series for 'The Confidant' given the identical casting (except for Michelle but I was half-expecting Michelle Yim to pop out from somewhere). Although Come On Cousin has a different story compared to 'Inbound Troubles' I find Come on Cousin to still be very funny even if it pales in comparison compared to its predecessor in terms of consistency. As for Tiger Cubs II, I know that people are turned off with 'Jessica Hsuan' gone but I think the downfall for this series compared to the first one is that the script is less tight and therefore less entertaining.

Thoughts on TVB's 48th 2014 Anniversary Gala Show

I just watched TVB's 48th Anniversary Gala and and I can say that it was generally entertaining. Clashing with HKTV's grand opening for their online TV broadcast, I was expecting TVB to summon all of their artists and make it as grand as possible (like last year) and this year the show was not bad at all. 

One of the most memorable moment throughout the show was of course Wong Cho Lam's marriage proposal to Leanne Li during the magic segment. I applaud Wong Cho Lam for having the courage to propose in front of hundreds of celebrities and hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of HK citizens glued to the television. That being said, he wasn't scared of Leanne rejecting him anyway since he probably knew she would definitely said 'yes'! I liked the fact that Wong Cho Lam's buddies like Bob, Roger, Eric Tsang were informed beforehand and were genuinely excited for Cho Lam's proposal. 

Wong Cho Lam's marriage proposal though faced some criticisms from the public saying it was an attention-seeking attempt to boost up ratings. I see where everyone is coming from this but:

1. HKTV was actually the one trying who tried to drag down TVB's ratings by deliberately choosing their grand opening day for the 19th of November.If HKTV wants to drag down TVB's ratings, why can't TVB do something back? 

2. I don't see why Wong Cho Lam can't propose in front of TV. Like what he said himself, it was a golden opportunity where all of his close colleagues, whether friends like Bob, the elderly like Eric Tsang, Dodo Cheng and Liza Wang and giving a chance for the audience to witness their life moment. 

It's a win-win situation (where TVB may gain higher ratings and word of mouth and Cho Lam gained a fiancée). As simple as that.

I expected it but still found it rather bizarre how some people thought Leanne 'deserved' a better looking person who should be around the same height as her. She looked more than happy to marry Wong Cho Lam and I don't think she said 'yes' because she was pressured but she was more shocked and moved by the proposal. Other than that, first time I have seen Wong Cho Lam to be that nervous and shaky! I could see that the celebrities such as Linda Chung, Law Lan (being part of the audience) was teary and genuinely moved by the marriage proposal as well.

Another surprise was that Oscar Leung was actually promoted as one of the hosts for the anniversary gala. I guess he did alright overall; he was quite eloquent, spoke rather clearly and knew his lines well. Slight problem was that he lacked the '幽默感‘ but that takes time and experience and I know he will improve given that he takes more opportunity as a host for live shows.Unsurprisingly though, Charmanie Sheh is officially TVB's number one sister. She was everywhere!

Someone did mention that Ruco Chan was basically seen no-where to be seen (I did see him during the racing segment and his bald head was very noticeable) or more on the fact that not much attention was paid to him. After all it was an anniversary gala and there were hundreds of celebrities so it wasn't too bad that he was buried into the background. I did notice he seemed to enjoy talking to Koni Lui at the background. 

What was irritating in my humble opinion was the constant overlapping amongst the hosts. Astrid Chan was never a good host in my opinion, Eric Tsang was uncertain throughout the whole time, Grace was too perky and rather unnatural, Luisa's voice always sounded lazy and unamusing and Nat Chan sort of looked a bit 'pissed off' (maybe from all the confusion and the games not being followed by the rules?). Also, when they rehearsed the show they should of realised that it was difficult for the candles to be lit with all the air-conditioning or wind. 

Want to know my favourite segment? OK. It was the singing segment involving the cast from the series 'Come On, Cousin'. Songs sang by couples such as Louis Cheng and Ivana Wong were great but the most groundbreaking was Ram Chiang's singing performance that was absolute magnificent! Will he become the next hidden gem like Fred Cheng?  

Overall, I admit that not all parts of the show kept me on my seat but frankly anything of two hours is a tad too much for me to bear. I could see everyone had fun so all good!!!

My Top 5 Recommended 2014 TVB Series to win Best Drama of the Year!

As you have been aware I haven't been blogging for a long while since last year yet I still watch the majority of the TVB series that have been broadcast this year. Some of them were surprisingly great, some rather disappointing but most were actually quite decent this year. The following list will be very brief and I will save the details and genuine thoughts for my reviews instead. I admit that this wasn't the best year for TVB in terms of ratings but story and acting-wise rather impressing indeed!

In no particular order;

5. Glided Chopsticks (食為奴）

I really enjoyed watching this series for the amazing chemistry among the cast and rather dramatic at times. It pales in comparison compared to 'Happy Ever After' but still nice in my opinion. This series is not without its flaws though but still worth a try for an exploration on the struggles to become an emperor. Highly recommended!

4. Storm in a Cocoon (守業者）

This is a very suspenseful series that will keep you on your seat throughout the entire series. At first glance you will be unamused by its rather boring looking background set in the olden days and about silk business (more about who killed the big sister). A must watch! 

3. Never Dance Alone (女人俱樂部)

I never really had any high expectations for this year but yes it was great in the sense it portrayed the idea of friendship really well. Because of this series, I am now liking Flora Chan more and more and basically like all seven main characters. Go watch it! 

2. Ruse of Engagement (叛逃) 

Even though this series was filmed three years ago, it was captivating to watch and had me guessing all the time 'who is the mole?'. If you haven't watched it yet I'll let you figure it out. Even though some of the cast's acting (cough cough Aimee and Ron) were cringing to watch at times. This is not your everyday crime drama. Try it out! 

1. Black Heart White Soul (忠奸人)

Last but not the least, Black Heart White Soul was an amazing series. Watch it for Roger's Kwok fantastic portrayal of the selfish 'Matt' and you can really expect a lot of serious drama in this series. Recommended! 

As you can see, all these series excel in their unique ways and trust me you will like these series. For a light-hearted series try 'Never Dance Alone'. For an action-packed crime series try 'Ruse of Engagement', 'Glided Chopsticks' if you like palace drama (do not be misled, this is not really a comedy series at all), 'Black Heart White Soul' if you are a fan of the battle of wits and scheming for one's own self-interest, and finally 'Storm in a Cocoon' for a pre-modern themed detective series. I will be satisfied if any of these series win 'Best Drama of the year' for the 2014 TVB Anniversary Awards Ceremony (though my instinct for some reasons tells me 'Line Walker' will win instead) and we shall find out. I'm back!

Hi everyone! I am officially back to the Hong TV Series blogging world after a one year hiatus! It has been a big year for me with exams every now but now I have enough time and energy to concentrate on blogging for TVB series. I have finally finished my last exam and now just waiting on results but frankly I am not going to spend too much time thinking about because there is absolutely nothing that I can do now to change the results whatsoever so best to move on. On the other hand, my blog has surpassed its one year anniversary and whilst I haven't been posting for a very long time, I have still watched quite a lot of TVB series this year (which means heaps of reviews to come). Today also marks the anniversary for both TVB (48th birthday) and HKTV (grand opening). I may also possibly post episode thoughts on HKTV series! More posts to come so remember to stay tuned to my blog!

Farewell Message

Hi everyone,

Sadly this would be my last post for HK TV Critic for the rest of 2013 and throughout 2014 until next year December. I just got my high school study score for a subject and I did miserably. Much that I want to keep on writing posts, I think I will need to control myself and allocate more time for my studies next year (my last year of high school) before I get to know which university I get into. Even though this blog was a truly short one, I do thank you all for the comments and I will see you guys again perhaps once I get my score back and I can happily tell you guys that my sacrifices throughout the year was worth it. Like tonight's anniversary awards ceremony, the speeches from artists mentioned how being serious, hard-working and determination is what it takes to be successful, so perhaps I can take this from TVB for my career as a student. I do wish you all Merry Christmas and live well!

TVB Anniversary Awards Ceremony 2013 Thoughts and Review

First.... Woah!!! This years anniversary awards ceremony was truly surprisingly. I expected TVB would change it up a little bit but its gone so different! 

Most Improved Actor
Winner: Vincent Wong (Friendly Fire, Season of Love, Sergeant Tabloid, A Change of Heart, Will Power) 

Yay!!! Congratulations to Vincent! He has improved the most this year especially with his role in Will Power! His speech was clear, humble and optimistic for the future. 

Most Improved Actress

Winner: Eliza Sam (Inbound Troubles, Triumph in the Skies II, Sniper Standoff, The Hippocratic Crush II)

Expected win but a rather deserving win! From the nomination clip I couldn't see any other candidates whose popularity or acting skills may have been near Eliza, even Priscilla Wong who has Sandy Yu promoting her like hell. 

Best Actress in a Supporting Role 

Winner: Elena Kong - Triumph in the Skies II

Congratulations! Elena Kong finally won an award! Even though I don't think TITSII should be her representative role, I admired how she is always hardworking and willing to take 'heavy-flavour' roles! She was really surprised when announced she was the winner and she was really emotional! 

Best Actor in a Supporting Role 
15. Benz Hui - Bounty Lady 

Really surprising win! Don't take me wrong as I am proud for Benz to take the award but I just never thought a veteran like him would win given TVB wants Edwin or Him to win so much! I bet you deep inside Edwin he was disappointed losing to all 4 nominations! Oh well frankly I think Benz was amazing in Bounty Lady. He said his speech in a really joyful way and the content on how people shouldn't blame TVB was right in a way.

Most Popular TV Female Character 

Winner: Yiu Man Ying - Brother's Keeper (Kristal Tin)

Woo! Go Kristal! Her humble speech was really touching but I don't really buy it how she 'never' thought she would win because deep in there she should have a clear picture that she was the most likely winner. Well Congratulations to her because her character in Brother's Keeper was truly the most popular! By the way I find it rather weird how they made the Popular TV awards being presented at the very end as it sort of overshadows the Best Actor/Actress Awards. 

Most Popular TV Male Character 

Winner: Koo Ha Yeung (Jayden) - Triumph in the Skies II (Chilam Cheung)

Expected win and congratulations to Chilam! I found it rather funny how he mentioned his not really well liked by people from TVB (he didn't win the Best Actor Award where 50/50 of the votes is from audience/judging panel). Even though he wasn't my favourite character in TITSII, he was truly the most popular amongst the audience! By the way I like how he gave recognition to Francis Ng for teaching him so much and I was surprised Francis Ng was able to come half way in that I nearly thought he would get an award!!!

Best Actress in a Leading Role 

Winner: Kristal Tin - Brother's Keeper

Although expected I don't agree on this award for Best Actress. There were much more truly deserving Best Actresses such as Tavia Yeung (major improvement from HCI), Joey Meng, Ada Choi and Esther Kwan! Nevertheless, I do like her emotional speech and I do wish her well for her TV Career. By the way poor Linda for having high hopes for winning Best Actress (she wore black dress as the pattern for previous Best Actresses) and at the end she ended up with nothing... But looking at it in the positive perspective, I think it is a gain for her because there would be no complaints from viewers. I believe Linda Chung will get her opportunity in the future (perhaps Tiger Cubs 2?)

Best Actor in a Leading Role

Winner: Dayo Wong - Bounty Lady

Now this is what I call surprise! I was half-expecting Chilam, Franics or Kenneth to take this award but suddenly it was Dayo. Congratulations to Dayo for Best Actor even though I feel like this award was wasted. Wasted not because Dayo didn't deserve it but he didn't need it or care about it. If you have heard the phone call you would of known he had no idea what was going on and was just being thankful like it was a joke. I do however praise Dodo for making a quick and clever initiative to call Dayo about the win even though I am slightly suspicious on how quickly they were able to get a microphone and Dodo's mobile phone so fast. I guess I am over-thinking...

Best Drama

Winner: Triumph in the Skies II 

Definitely no surprises for this one but I am overall satisfied so congratulations!. TITSII may not have the best storyline but given that it bragged the biggest cast, gained the most popularity and had the highest ratings there was no way TVB would give it to another drama (except Brother's Keeper but that series had its own flaws anyway). By the way they are going to make a movie version of TITS but I don't think its necessary and it may over-milk the series like 'EU'. 

Other mentions: Sorry but I am disgusted on how Priscilla and Tony won Best Informative Program and Best hosts. That for me was the biggest disappointment of the night. 

Overall, this years TVB awards ceremony was enjoyable to watch but shockingly horrible in terms of time management and atmosphere. The speech background music tried to make it so emotional but it was rather distracting. Oh and can somebody fire the crew who keeps on telling people to shorten their speeches? There was so much time left that they basically had nothing to do so I was pretty grumpy with them. I also didn't like how the tone of the awards ceremony was more like an anniversary gala rather than an anniversary ceremony like back in 2012? Costumes worn by everything were good and the results were great though!

Reference to my predictions: I got 8/10 right I think which I am happy with!
