Thoughts and Review for the Results of TVB's 2014 Anniversary Awards Ceremony

I apologise for the delayed post as the awards ceremony has already been broadcast days ago but I was so busy that I didn't have too much time to blog about my thoughts. Now here we go. This year's result was both surprisingly and expected but overall each winner is well-deserved for their respected award category. Here is the full list of the winners:Best Drama: Line Walker <使徒行者>Best Actor: Roger Kwok (郭晉安) for Black Heart White Soul <忠奸人>Best Actress: Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) for Line Walker <使徒行者>Best Supporting Actress: Josie Ho (何超儀) for Tomorrow is Another Day <再戰明天>My Favorite Female Character: Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) for Line Walker <使徒行者>Most Improved Actress: Priscilla Wong (黃翠如)Best Informational Program: Guardians of Life 2 <守護生命的故事2>Best Variety Special:A Time of Love <愛情來的時候>Best Supporting Actor: Ram Chiang (蔣志光) for Come On, Cousin <老表,你好hea!>My Favorite Male Character: Benz Hui (許紹雄) for Line Walker <使徒行者>Most Improved Actor: Louis Cheung (張繼聰)Best Theme Song: Line Walker <使徒行者> ending theme by Jinny Ng (吳若希)Best Hosts: Nancy Sit (薛家燕) and Wong Cho Lam (王祖藍) for Walk the Walk, Talk the Talk <Sunday扮嘢王>Professional Acting Awards: Chu Wai Tak (朱維德), So Yan Chi (蘇恩慈), Li Ka Ding (李家鼎), Law Lok Lam (羅樂林), and Ram Chiang (蔣志光)Lifetime Achievement Award: Tam Ping Man (譚炳文)

Most Improved Actor: Louis Cheung (張繼聰)

Comment: Yes! I am very happy for Louis to win this award. He is to be to me the most stand-out actor in TVB's recent history and he is fascinating in every role that he takes, whether it is the calculative Marco, funny Mario or the mighty 9th Prince, he out-shined everyone. Some might say he should get Best Supporting instead but for me getting Most Improved Actor is perfect because one he deserves it more out of anyone else in the list (yes including Sammy Shum if in terms of both popularity and acting skills) and two Most Improved Actor recognises all of his roles this year, rather than just his Marco role (since he was equally amusing in all roles). His speech was also very thankful and well-said. Frankly I think he has improved a lot from his supporting roles and he is somewhat restricted with limited screen-time and character development, perhaps it's time for him to take on leading roles? I say yes.

Most Improved Actress: Priscilla Wong (黃翠如)

Comment: I certainly didn't expect this result but I was surprised in a good way. I was frankly expected Grace Chan to win since she is both so obviously and heavily promoted by TVB. Priscilla on the outside looks nice, but for me it is her acting that counts. She has improved tremendously since 'Karma Rider' where she is much more clear in her lines and shows much more appropriate emotions. Samantha Ko is in the same league but I'm fine with Priscilla grabbing the award for this year. Samantha has plenty of chances in the future. Also, I have heard from people that she was supposedly frozen by TVB for some reason but perhaps this award demonstrates that she is still favoured by TVB? For Priscilla now I hope she gets more challenging and breakthrough roles because she needs it or otherwise I might not see much in her anymore. But anyway again an eloquent speech filled with gratitude. Well done.

Best Supporting Actress: Josie Ho (何超儀) for Tomorrow is Another Day <再戰明天>

Comment: I have a lot to say about this award. For a start yes I suspect this award is rigged by TVB. Like many others, Josie Ho is the daughter of a billionaire (known as Stanley Ho) who possesses enormous amounts of wealth and power in Macau.  I am convinced that the award was given to her because of TVB's relationship with the Ho Family and like some said it was to 'give face' to the Ho family. When Benz Hui announced the award I could already see the audience's reaction as sort of giggling and the applause seemed a bit forced and stiff. Nevertheless, whether this is true or not though it is no longer important to me because she really deserved this award. In the series 'Tomorrow is Another Day' she was very convincing as a battered and inspired 'Ding Ho Ho'. She showed her lack of confidence, the pain she went through, the anxiety of not being able to see her son and the joy of being able to have a second chance in life. That being said, I thank TVB for rigging this award then because I probably will cringe if Sharon Chan (the media favourite) won this award because she pales in comparison compared to Josie or the others. Besides Josie Ho's speech was also thankful. Josie you truly deserve this award!

Best Supporting Actor: Ram Chiang (蔣志光) for Come On, Cousin <老表,你好hea!>

Comment: I also have a lot to say about this award. Again I was a bit shocked when Elena Kong presented the award to Ram because I thought Benz Hui would win for a start but it was Ram. If you want me to be honest I will and I genuinely think Benz Hui deserved it more in terms of acting. In terms of popularity Ram Chiang was very popular this year for people discovering his music talent and appearing as another 'hidden gem' (like Fred Cheng), but in my humble opinion his acting in 'Come On, Cousin' was rather mundane. His speech though was a highlight of the ceremony where he thanked Jesus and he sort of knew the audience would question whether this award is for his music talent or his acting skills. Ram answered well by saying '20 years ago I won an award for singing, 20 years later I won this year for acting. But this time it is different because I am acting as a singer so therefore I am a professional actor'. Whilst Benz Hui may be a more deserving candidate, I am still very happy for Ram because he didn't disappoint at all in 'Come On, Cousin' as a wise advisor in the series and he mastered the body movements and facial expressions necessary for a comedy drama. Add oil Ram!

Best Theme Song: Line Walker <使徒行者> ending theme by Jinny Ng (吳若希)

Comment: Not much to comment but I seriously think that there were many better candidates for best theme song like Constellations from the series 'M Club' or even Fred Cheng's 'Surrender' for the series 'Overachievers' and others. At the end of the day it's best theme song not best singer so I am fine with the award. For me if some-one else sang this song it would have sounded better because in my humble opinion I think Jinny Ng has a lot of room for improvement in terms of singing in tune and etc. The song itself is nice and very relevant to romance plot of the series 'Line Walker' though so I am not going to complain too much about this award since whether a song sounds good or bad depends on people's preference and is subjective in nature.

Best Hosts: Nancy Sit (薛家燕) and Wong Cho Lam (王祖藍) for Walk the Walk, Talk the Talk <Sunday扮嘢王>

Comment: Great win for Wong Cho Lam and Nancy Sit! They both did a marvellous job at the show 'Walk the Walk, Talk and Talk' and made themselves looking as ridiculous as possible which not everyone is able or willing to do so. They are both also good hosts because they share a refreshing couple as hosts and both speak share great chemistry that makes the show go smooth and enjoyable to watch. Not much people will pay attention to this award but for me they really deserve a mention. At the same time their speeches were quite funny and humble!

Best Variety Special:A Time of Love <愛情來的時候>

Comment: Honestly I believe that TVB just added in this award category just to recognise the series 'A Time of Love' after spending so much money on it and hoping it will become a hit. To be fair though this series is well-deserved if compared to the other Best Variety Special candidates such as Anniversary Gala and Miss Hong Kong 2014 etc because it was enjoyable to watch and gave a unique feel I guess. Not much to comment.

Best Informational Program: Guardians of Life 2 <守護生命的故事2>

Comment: Too bad Lawrence Cheng wasn't here to accept the award since he was the host for the program but another deserving win! I did watch parts of this show and this was indeed very informative talking the stories and facts of health conditions and sick patients. I could tell that the director for this show used up a lot of time and effort for this show to become alive. I also like how the people behind the stage got a chance to share their thoughts so kudos to everyone!

Professional Acting Awards: Chu Wai Tak (朱維德), So Yan Chi (蘇恩慈), Li Ka Ding (李家鼎), Law Lok Lam (羅樂林), and Ram Chiang (蔣志光)
Lifetime Achievement Award: Tam Ping Man (譚炳文)

Comment: This is another highlight of the show. Since 2012 TVB has been honouring green-leaf artists for their long-time commitment to TVB and although viewers might claim they are 'pork-chop' awards, for the winners it is a touching recognition for their career as an actor or actress! Same goes for the Lifetime Achievement Award!

My Favorite Female Character: Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) for Line Walker <使徒行者>

Comment: Expected win. Charmaine is also well-liked by the public and her roles as 'Sister Deng' was very likeable with viewers. Hence positive plus positive equals a win. Well-deserved win for her.

My Favorite Male Character: Benz Hui (許紹雄) for Line Walker <使徒行者>

Comment: Yes! Another deserving win as Benz Hui was intriguing as 'Foon Hei Gor' in the series 'Line Walker' even if an odd for that role. If you think about it this means he has won awards three years consecutively (2012 he won Professional Acting Award, 2013 Best Supporting Actor and 2014 My Favourite Male Character). Best Actor next year? Who knows?

Best Actress: Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) for Line Walker <使徒行者>

Comment: Expected, expected and expected. Charmaine Sheh again did well in the series 'Line Walker' and her speech was great in the sense she was humble and acknowledged that she won because she is lucky to be in a role with a good script and well liked by the audience. Even though she has a lot to improve she exceeded all of my expectations set for her in Line Walker so I am happy she won!

Best Actor: Roger Kwok (郭晉安) for Black Heart White Soul <忠奸人>

Comment: Woohoo! Roger Kwok truly deserved this award for his fantastic performance in 'Black Heart White Soul' as the selfish Matt. That was a funny moment when Chilam said prior announcing Roger Kwok was the winner by saying 'Hey guys you know that you can win an award even if you are not attending the awards ceremony?' (implying that Raymond Lam was the winner) and we got a glimpse of the audience's reaction as 'no way', 'What?' and 'No this can't be true', and then finally a sign of relief for Roger when he heard that he won.

Best Drama: Line Walker <使徒行者>

Comment: Expected win and I guess a deserved win even though I can list five other series that excelled Line Walker in terms of plot consistency and having a refreshing and breakthrough story.

My overall thoughts? Yes I would of hoped that TVB announced the top five for both the Best Actor and Best Actress award. Rating wise TVB didn't do so well with the peak of only 34 points when Charmaine was announced TV Queen compared to last year's 41 points when Dayo Wong was announced TVB King. Dodo's croaky voice was also a bit of a distraction but I applaud her for still trying her hardest to continue hosting and trying to seem relaxed about it. Overall like 2013 all winners are well-deserved which adds credibility to the TVB Awards!

TVB Anniversary Awards Ceremony 2014 Nomination Review - 萬千星輝頒獎典禮2014

Finally. The award ceremony nominations have been finalised and I dare-say this year is one of the best nomination list in their award's history. Inevitably some whose acting was sub-par still managed to slip into the nomination list but from what I can see there are not much notable omissions at all, which is saying a lot. (But I am frankly disappointed that the M Club Actresses aren't seen anywhere in the nomination list) :( What I glad about this year's nomination list is that they have finally added categories that have been long introduced in other award ceremonies such as Starhub TVB Awards and TVB Star Malaysia Awards, etc of Best Theme Song. To me this shows that TVB is listening to the demands of viewers and that is good news.

Note: Best Actor/Actress in a Leading Role and Best Drama will be decided by the general public and a judging panel.

Other awards such as Best Theme Song, My Favourite TV Male/Female Characters will be determined by 100% voters.

The rest will be decided by TVB's judging panel and their co-workers.

The Awards Ceremony will be held on the 15th of December (same day I will get my final high school results...)

Best Actor in a Leading Role:

Best Actor
Wong Cho Lam (王祖藍) – Gilded Chopsticks <食為奴>
Ben Wong (黃智賢) – Gilded Chopsticks <食為奴>
Steven Ma (馬浚偉) – Storm in a Cocoon <守業者>
Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) – Ruse of Engagement <叛逃>
Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) – The Ultimate Addiction <點金勝手>
Kenneth Ma (馬國明) – Ghost Dragon of Cold Mountain <寒山潛龍>
Lawrence Ng (吳啟華) – Tomorrow Is Another Day <再戰明天>
Joe Ma (馬德鐘) – Tiger Cubs 2 <飛虎Ⅱ>
Him Law (羅仲謙) – Tiger Cubs 2 <飛虎Ⅱ>
Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) – Overachievers <名門暗戰>
Raymond Wong (黃浩然) – Overachievers <名門暗戰>

My Top 5:

Ruco Chan (Ruse of Engagement)
Steven Ma (Storm in a Cocoon)
Raymond Lam (Line Walker)
Roger Kwok (Black Black White Soul)
Wayne Lai (Overachievers)

My Top Pick to be the Winner: Roger Kwok (Black Heart White Soul)

Comment: I can see that Him Law is promoted by TVB as a leading actor but frankly he is not the lead actor in Tiger Cubs II, but more of a supporting actor. Joe Ma is the leading actor and he is not bad overall in the series. Joe can really make that serious look that suits his role as a commander but his expressions are a tad bit wooden for my liking. Nevertheless Him Law never disappoints when it comes to acting and I think he did a decent job in Tiger Cubs II. Him can really display a variety of emotions including being shocked and angry. I have no problem with him in the nomination list (no pun intended).

Nice to also know that Steven Ma is included in this year's nomination list. His performance in 'Storm in a Cocoon' is one of his best throughout his acting career and I hope that he will at least get into the top five.

Wong Cho Lam is funny in Glided Chopsticks but frankly he has a long way to go if he wants to win Best Actor. Just for instance in 'Come on Cousin' his performance is both unconvincing and unnatural. His facial expression seems so forced and preposterously exaggerated that suggests to me he needs to fine-tune his comedy skills to improve (the fine-tuning part also applies to Ben Wong). I'm sure he will but for the meanwhile let's give credit for him as a scriptwriter instead.

Why did I choose Roger Kwok? Well because he was absolutely sensational as a selfish person in Black Heart White Soul, and also did great as a selfless 'Lam Joy Ye' in Come On Cousin. He is like a chameleon, he can blend into any role given to him given that the character is well-written in the first place and out-shine everyone else.

Best Actress in a Leading Role:

Best Actress
Tavia Yeung (楊怡) – Storm in a Cocoon <守業者>
Priscilla Wong (黃翠如) – Swipe Tap Love <愛我請留言>
Selena Li (李詩韻) – Ghost Dragon of Cold Mountain <寒山潛龍>
Kristal Tin (田蕊妮) – Black Heart White Soul <忠奸人>
Louisa So (蘇玉華) – Rear Mirror <載得有情人>
Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) – Line Walker <使徒行者>
Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣) – All That Is Bitter Is Sweet <大藥坊>
Kate Tsui (徐子珊) – Tomorrow Is Another Day <再戰明天>
Ivana Wong (王菀之) – Come On, Cousin <老表,你好hea!>
Maggie Shiu (邵美琪) – Overachievers <名門暗戰>
Nancy Wu (胡定欣) – Overachievers <名門暗戰>

My Top 5:

Tavia Yeung (Storm in a Cocoon)
Charmaine Sheh (Line Walker)
Kate Tsui (Tomorrow is Another Day)
Flora Chan (Never Dance Alone)*
Carmen Lee (Never Dance Alone)*

*(even though not in the nomination list, I decided to rig it into the list anyway)

My Top Pick to be the Winner: Charmaine Sheh (Line Walker)

Comment: What a pity that the M Club girls didn't get a chance to be nominated at all (probably my only disappointment in the nomination list) but I don't care and I have chosen Flora Chan and Carmen Lee in my own personal top five because frankly they deserve it more better (for their magnificent performances) than other actresses in the list above. Loletta Lee should also deserve a mention. If purely just based on performance, Carmen should win hands down.

Everyone knows that Charmaine Sheh will most likely win Best Actress and I am ok with that even though she could do better in Line Walker. I chose her as my top choice because to be honest she exceeded my expectations of her in the first place and her acting was undeniably good. To me her role as 'Sister Ding' in Line Walker was her best performance ever so worth a mention and perhaps the Best Actress award. I know awards should only be based purely on performances only but the reality is that popularity is just as important and Charmaine is the most media-savy actress. Look at her responses in interviews and you will know what I mean.

Other than that it seems that the competition for this year the Best Actress nomination category is a bit weak with not many strong competitors. Nice to see Nancy Wu is promoted as a leading actress but I think she needs a better role to win Best Actress. Same goes for Maggie Siu who I think never fails to give a competent performance but is lacking a well-written character to give a breakthrough performance worthy of a mention. Hopefully she will some day. I also realised that this year there are no series from Myolie Wu

Overachievers <名門暗戰>

My Top 5:
Storm in a Cocoon
Ruse of Engagement
Black Heart White Soul
Never Dance Alone
Glided Chopsticks

My Top Pick to be the Winner: Black Heart White Soul (Hot Favourite is Line Walker)

This year is probably a clash between Black Heart White Soul and Line Walker. I liked both series for different reasons. For Line Walker, it fulfilled my dream to have an already powerful mole (in this case they had a black cop portrayed by Lau Kong) then Mr.Songs as even more powerful leaders from a range of different fields (politics, legislative, financial, real estate) and then a group of even higher status leaders from all around the world. Even though that series was highly flawed (that's why I didn't include it in my Top 5 Recommended Series List) and the story-line went messy I think overall the mix between comedy and serious drama redeemed the cringe-worthy nearing towards the end part of the series.

For Black Heart White Soul, I was addicted to it because of one character and that was 'Matt' portrayed by Roger Kwok. The storyline was a bit unrealistic but it was cleverly linked together. For my comments about the other series that I chose for Top 5, feel free to read my post of 'My Top 5 Recommended 2014 TVB Series to win Best Drama of the Year!

Whilst anniversary series are usually the big contenders for Best Series, the non-anniversary are surprisingly better to watch in my humble opinion. You can also find out more about my thoughts from my post 'Hong Kong TV Series that I am watching at the moment... '.

Best Series Theme Song:

My Top 5:
Overachievers Main Theme Song by Suzanne Kwan
Storm in a Cocoon Main Theme Song by Steven Ma
Never Dance Alone Main Theme Song
Black Heart White Soul Main Theme Song
Line Walker Sub-Theme Song

My Top Pick to be the Winner: Never Dance Alone Main Theme Song

Comment: Very hard for me to choose top five in this category since there are so many good songs from TVB series every year. I must applaud TVB for being loose on the rule that the award includes sub theme-songs as well. At the end of the day this award is very subjective in the sense it all depends on people's preferences and personally I liked the main theme song from the series 'Never Dance Alone'.

[TO BE CONTINUED>>>>>>>>>>>] REVISIT THIS POST LATER AGAIN, COMMENTS FOR THE REST OF THE AWARDS WILL BE UPDATED SOON:

OK... here is part 2:

My Favorite Male Character

Steven Ma (Storm in a Cocoon)
Roger Kwok (Black Heart White Soul)
Louis Cheng (Black Heart White Soul)
Benz Hui (Black Heart White Soul)
Ruco Chan (Outbound Love)

My Top Pick to be the Winner: Benz Hui (Black Heart White Soul)

Comment: Benz Hui's role in Line Walker as 'Foon Hei Gor' obviously generated the most noise this year and whilst he is portrayed as a villain in the drama, the intrigue behind Foon Hei Gor has attracted the attention of numerous fans. Overall, I don't mind too much who wins for this category because it is 'most favourite', not 'best actor' or whatever so I respect the opinion of the majority.

My Favorite Female Character
Michelle Yim (米雪)– Coffee Cat Mama <貓屎媽媽>
Aimee Chan (陳茵媺) – Outbound Love <單戀雙城>

My Top Five:
Tavia Yeung (Storm in a Cocoon)
Selena Li (Ghost Dragon of Cold Mountain)
Charmaine Sheh (Line Walker)
Josie Ho (Tomorrow is Another Day)
Nancy Wu (Overachievers)

My Top Pick who will win: Charmaine Sheh (Line Walker)

Comment: This award fits Charmaine's situation so perfectly. She is very likeable with a large dedicated fan-base in HK, though her acting is sometimes rather inconsistent. Again I don't mind who wins because it's people's favourite.

Best Supporting Actor
Evergreen Mak (麥長青) – Return of the Silver Tongue <舌劍上的公堂>
Tony Hung (洪永城) – Outbound Love <單戀雙城>
Elliot Yue (岳華) – Storm in a Cocoon <守業者>

My Top Five:
Louis Cheng (Black Heart White Soul)
Benz Hui (Line Walker)
Vincent Wong (Tomorrow is Another Day)
Ram Chiang (Come On Cousin)
Power Chan (Overachievers)

My Top Pick on who will be the winner: Couldn't decide among Louis Cheng, Benz Hui or Power Chan

Comment: Every year the best supporting actor category is in my opinion the most competitive and includes the most deserving nominees. Acting-wise, everyone I mentioned did well.

Best Supporting Actress
Lin Xia Wei (林夏薇) – Outbound Love <單戀雙城>
Nancy Wu (胡定欣) – Gilded Chopsticks <食為奴>

Louise Lee (Ruse of Engagement)
Eliza Sam (Never Dance Alone)
Elena Kong (Line Walker)
Natalie Tong (All That is Bitter is Sweet)
Josie Ho (Tomorrow is Another DAy)

My Top Pick on who may win: Elena Kong (Line Walker)

Comment: To be honest even though Elena Kong did not have much screen-time for that series, she still did a very decent job by portraying a battered woman so convincingly and then being a grateful person. Others did not bad at all.

Most Improved Actor
Sammy Sum (沈震軒) in Line Walker <使徒行者>, All That Is Bitter Is Sweet <大藥坊>
Tony Hung (洪永城) in Outbound Love <單戀雙城>, Swipe Tap Love <愛我請留言>,Rear Mirror <載得有情人>, Pilgrimage to Football Meccas <走過足球聖地>

My Top 2:
Sammy Sum
Louis Cheng

My Top Pick: Louis Cheng

Comment: I was surprised to see Louis to be put in this category but to be honest he didn't 'improve the most' but instead every role that he acted was so great that it was hard to improve any further. That is why I am anticipating for him to join heavier roles and meatier screen-time to expand his potential. He better get this award to get him more opportunities for greater roles. Sammy Sum has improved as well but frankly pales in comparison if compared to Louis Cheng.

Most Improved Actress
Lin Xia Wei (林夏薇) in Outbound Love <單戀雙城>, Ghost Dragon of Cold Mountain <寒山潛龍>
Samantha Ko (高海寧) in Come Home Love <愛•回家>, Outbound Love <單戀雙城>,Line Walker <使徒行者>, All That Is Bitter Is Sweet <大藥坊>
Grace Chan (王君馨) in Organized Dining <搵食飯團>, Overachievers <名門暗戰>, Pok Oi Charity Show <博愛歡樂傳萬家>, TVB Anniversary Ceremony <萬千星輝賀台慶>
Jacqueline Wong in The Ultimate Addiction <點金勝手>, Tomorrow Is Another Day <再戰明天>, Explore Japan Rail & Drive <夏•日•悠遊>, Sidewalk Scientist <學是學非>
Priscilla Wong (黃心穎) in Return of the Silver Tongue <舌劍上的公堂>, Swipe Tap Love <愛我請留言>, The Conquerors <快樂聯盟>, Pilgrimage to Football Meccas <走過足球聖地>, I Am A Cook <我係小廚神>

My Top 2:
Samantha Ko
Grace Chan

Top Pick: Either

Comment: Grace Chan surprised me in Overachievers as she did really well. Samantha Ko is generally good. I don't really mind who wins in this category.

Who will win? We shall find out on the 15th of December!!!
